Virginia Tech’s plan for the fall 2020 semester

Our redesigned website outlines the university’s preparations for the fall semester and beyond as we enact our principles-based approach to the COVID-19 pandemic.

          PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

On June 8, President Tim Sands announced the university’s plans for the fall semester. The message outlined the principles, the academic calendar, the impact of public health guidelines on the semester, modes of instruction, remote opportunities, events, housing and dining, and much more.

          Principles

The principles seen below are guiding our decisions as we prepare for a fall semester that is as close as possible to the traditional Virginia Tech experience.

          • We affirm our highest priority is the safety, health, and well-being of our community, and we are committed to science and the recommended public health practices as we transition to an on-campus learning and research environment.
          • We remain committed to our tripartite teaching, research, and outreach mission and its transformational impacts on the intellectual development of students and the economic vitality of the communities that we serve.
          • We are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion and reaffirm the Principles of Community and InclusiveVT, our individual and collective commitment to Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence.
          • We will be guided by the values and aspirations expressed in our strategic plan, “The Virginia Tech Difference – Advancing Beyond Boundaries.”
          • We acknowledge the value of the Virginia Tech student experience.
          • We will continue to rely on internal and external input from a wide array of stakeholders to guide our holistic, principles-based approach to the fall semester.
          • We pledge to communicate in a transparent, authentic, and timely manner so that all of Virginia Tech’s stakeholders can make informed decisions as we meet the challenges ahead.
          • We will make informed, data-driven decisions and operate within our resource capacity.
          • We will be flexible and prepared with resiliency and a sense of service that permeates the Hokie Nation.

          Health RESOURCES

As we prepare for the fall semester, we are learning how to live well and work effectively together. The safety, security, and well-being of our community is our principal focus, and a variety of health resources will help us achieve this goal.

          Research Resources

The university continues to recognize the importance of safety as it transitions back to an in-person student-learning experience and ramps up research programs. The COVID-19 Research and Continuity Guidance microsite contains various resources for researchers, including Phase Two: Reopening Guidance.

          Teaching Resources

Virginia Tech will take a phased approach to academic instruction, placing emphasis on health and safety in order to conduct in-person instruction that enhances experiential learning. In-person modes of instruction will be prioritized for courses, labs, studios, and performances that cannot be offered remotely at comparable quality.
